Two very different worlds came together on Sunday, August 10, 2014, at Jannelle & Eddie’s Whispering Oaks Terrace wedding in Temecula. Jannelle described her country music & line-dance-loving family as “very religious.” Some of Eddie’s family did not speak English…and country music was probably as high on their list as zapateados & banda were on her family’s list. They needed a DJ who could speak Spanish & English, play to an intercultural/bilingual crowd, and familiarity with country music + line dancing didn’t hurt.
THE LAY-OUT FOR THIS WHISPERING OAKS TERRACE WEDDING
The venue had many, many bonuses but one fatal flaw. As you can see from the photos, it’s gorgeous & offers a variety of photo settings. Unfortunately, the space for the reception is not dance-friendly. There is a railing around the eating area, preventing easy access to potential dance areas which are out-lying…among other things.
THE MUSIC
For the ceremony prelude, I played country love songs & romanticas. I played the Post Modern Jukebox’s “Marry Me/Canon in D” mash-up for the processional and Lorin Nicholson’s version of “Canon in D” for the bride’s entrance. The cocktail hour & dinner consisted of more soft country, bachata, and boleros. The First Dance was Tim McGraw’s “My Best Friend.” The Father-Daughter song was Chuck Wick’s “Stealing Cinderella.”
THE RECEPTION
After the dinner, toasts, Dollar Dance, & a group photo on the dance floor, I began the delicate journey of weaving together some “wedding standards,” country/line dancing, and Mexican music. To see how it went, check out the video here.
