What do you get when two lawyers get married? A raging party! No, seriously. Jessie & Rob met at the University of San Diego law school & had their first date while at a Public Interest law conference in DC. Legal eagle Jessie found me on Offbeat Bride, desperately hoping that at no point would I refer to her as “Mrs.” during her La Valencia Hotel wedding…roger that!
THE LA VALENCIA HOTEL WEDDING CEREMONY
One of my favorite choices for this wedding was the Forrest Gump “Feather Theme” during the ceremony prelude….nice! The processional was “Bloom” by Paper Kites, and Jessie entered to “Once Upon a Time/Storybook Love” from the Princess Bride soundtrack. After the ceremony, performed by a judge in a black robe of course, Jessie & Rob exited to Hall and Oates’ “You Make My Dreams Come True.” Indie vibes entertained during cocktail hour & dinner (The Shins, Bright Eyes, Vampire Weekend, Death Cab, Black Keys, Zombies, Ingrid Michaelson, Cage the Elephant, & Florence and the Machine).
THE LA VALENCIA HOTEL WEDDING RECEPTION
The Grand Entrance was full of inside jokes, funny stories, and entertaining tidbits. Who knew that:
- Bridesmaid Angela is a beef-rib-loving vegetarian?
- Bridesmaid Lisa B. is the ‘zanahoria’ to Jessie’s ‘espinaca’?
- Groomsman Daniel is a connoisseur of the finest “K-pop,” which is not a breakfast cereal but rather Korean pop music?
- Bridesmaid Lisa C. once stole a swim cap & can’t eat from a chocolate fountain AND watch “The OC” in the same night?
- Bridesmaid Danielle can’t sneeze fewer than 6 times in a row?
But, what I really can’t believe is that we made it through the entire planning process without either the bride or groom telling me that Rob’s birthday was the day after the wedding. Thank goodness one of the guests pointed this out to me during open dancing so we could sing Rob happy birthday!
DANCE FLOOR RAGER!!!!
Four more reasons I had a blast at this hotel wedding: 1) getting a request for some 2 Chainz & having the girls that requested it march in as “I’m Different” started, making an entrance before they got their groove on, 2) seeing all the lawyers go crazy when I played a block of 90s guilty pleasures (“Larger Than Life” Backstreet Boys, “Bye Bye Bye” N’SYNC, + “Oops, I Did It Again” Britney Spears), 3) noticing the groom’s parents were dancing the Cowboy Cha Cha when I played a request for the bride’s parents (“Margaritaville“) and, because of my expertise in country dancing, being able to follow it up with another Cowboy Cha Cha song (“Have You Ever Seen the Rain” CCR), AND 4) when I told the Maid of Honor/Bride’s sister that the Macarena was on the do-not-play list, she started dancing it anyway to the song that happened to be playing at the moment (“That Power” Will.I.Am) and surprisingly the timing of the song went perfectly with the dance! Check out all this sizzling dance floor action in the video here.
I LOVE THIS VENUE
Jessie & Rob’s wedding venue, the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla, rated a 10 out of 10 on the yummy food scale and a zero for “ease of load in.” NO loading zone. The elevator is too small to get any equipment in. And the ramp had a tight corner both myself & our arcade-style photo booth could barely squeeze through. My calves hurt for 3 days after pulling hundreds of pounds of equipment up the steep ramp 🙂
