Of all the San Diego wedding DJs in America’s finest city, Stephanie and Jonathan chose me to DJ and MC their Mission Brewery wedding on Saturday, June 23, 2018.
THE LOVE STORY
Stephanie (aka “Sky”) & Jonathan met in December 2015, on Bumble. Together they enjoy the craft beer scene (duh), bowling, their Chihuahua named Tina who is the light of their lives, puzzles, bad reality TV, and any adventure they can find. For their honeymoon, they are planning a trip to Europe.
On August 5 2017, Stephanie & Jon were in San Diego for a friend’s wedding. They managed to find time to go to the zoo, which is one of their favorite spots. They were wandering around and ended up at their special spot, which is surrounded by trees. Jon asked some random girl to take a picture of them which Stephanie thought was kind of weird. As he was walking back from giving her the camera, he pulled the ring box out of his pocket and got down on one knee! Stephanie was in complete shock. The girl was recording the entire thing on his phone. Stephanie says, “It was perfect.”
THE MISSION BREWERY WEDDING CEREMONY
For the prelude, I played ragtime/vintage covers of pop songs by Postmodern Jukebox. The first processional was “Blue Eyes” by the Middle Brother. The wedding party entered to “Honey I Been Thinking About You” by Jackie Greene. The bride entered to “Today I Met The Boy I’m Going to Marry” by Darlene Love. After a gorgeous ceremony upstairs in the industrial loft space, I played “Kick in the Head” by Dean Martin for the recessional.
THE RAGTIME RECEPTION
After a dinner of various food truck stations, there were toasts from the Best Man, the Maid of Honor (who I met during the venue walk-through), the Mother of Groom, and the Father of the Bride. Then Jonathon danced with his mother to “Blackbird” by the Beatles and Stephanie danced with her dad to “Stephanie” by Fleetwood Mac (the song she was named after). The First Dance was “Northern Wind” by City and Colour. We kicked off open dancing with a combo parent dance to “How Sweet It Is” by Marvin Gaye.
The cake cutting song was Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happyness.” The Bouquet Toss song at this Mission Brewery wedding was “Diva” by Beyonce. There was no Garter Toss. The last dance was “Kiss Me I’m #!@faced” by the Drop Kick Murpheys.
THE SAN DIEGO WEDDING PLAYLIST
For the cocktail hour/dinner playlist at this Mission Brewery wedding, the bride and groom requested my Big Band/Old Jazz/Swing playlist. For dinner, we turned it up with Miranda Lambert, Paul Simon, Beatles, Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, Queen – “Fat Bottom Girls,” The Cars – “Just what I Needed,” & Outkast – “So Fresh so Clean.”
For dancing, we had quite a few “must play” songs requested by the groom that Stephanie & I felt would be like dumping a bucket of cold water on the dance floor (Can you say ‘the Chicken Dance’ boys and girls?). So, at this Mission Brewery wedding, we had “Must Plays,” “Do Not Plays,” & “Play When/If the Groom is on the Floors.” How many of the groom’s “dance floor downers” like “Summertime” by Fresh Prince/DJ Jazzy Jeff ended up being played? Yep…not a one. As I predicted, he didn’t spend more than a few minutes on the dance floor all night :-p
Stephanie’s must-play list included: Dell the Funky Homo Sapien, Hit the Quan, Cha Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Wobble, David Guetta – Titanium, Chromeo – Jealous, Nsync or Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Funky Fresh Dressed by Mission Elliot ft. Ms. Jade, Got Your Money by Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The do-not-plays were: Country, YMCA, Whip Nae Nae, Macarena, & Harlem Shake.
Again, I was honored to be the one and only San Diego wedding DJ Stephanie and Jonathan trusted with their downtown San Diego wedding. Thank you! See more at #WelcomeTheWilsons or check out the photo booth gallery.
