On Saturday, February 22, 2014, I had the pleasure of…getting a flat tire on the way to Ben & Anna’s San Diego Air & Space Museum wedding in Balboa Park! Thank you so much to the team at Express Tire in Chula Vista who saved the day…and even took $5 off my bill out of kindness for my situation! I figured I’d “take one for the team” and knock out whatever “bummer” needed to happen for the day so Ben, Anna, and their family + friends could relax + enjoy disaster-free!
I met Ben + Anna at the San Diego Wedding Event last year and was intrigued by the idea of celebrating their big day at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. It turned out to be totally wonderful & amazing in every way–what a special day!
COCKTAIL HOUR
For cocktail hour, Ben & Anna selected the Vitamin String Quartet for their ambient music. Their “party-themed” Grand Entrance consisted of clips from “Get the Party Started,” “Get It Started,” “Applause,” “Jumpin’ Jumpin,'” and “Celebration.” As each pair was introduced, I gave them a personalized intro. Finally, I announced the newlyweds to Ben’s favorite band AC/DC (“TNT”) by saying, “It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for…Their love story kicked off at Casa Guadalajara’s Happy Hour and took them to Thailand, Japan, Mexico, and soon Argentina and Chile for their honeymoon. He’s partial to Fox News and the Seahawks. She’s partial to NPR and swore she’d never marry a sports fan. For the first time ever…Mr. and Mrs…”
SAN DIEGO AIR & SPACE MUSEUM WEDDING RECEPTION
This moment lead into their First Dance. As I softly faded up their music, I said, “On July 4th, 2013, Ben got down on one knee, took a ring out of his pocket, and asked Anna to marry him. She had already booked the wedding venue but pretended to be surprised! And now we write another chapter in their love story…their first dance as husband and wife…” We got a big laugh from the crowd and a big “ahhhhh.” It was a wonderful moment!
Another fun moment at this San Diego Air & Space Museum wedding was when Ben’s dad, who admitted to having “no sense of humor,” pretended to look for his reading glasses in his coat pocket so he could read his toast. Courtesy of DJ Staci and a little pre-planning, he pulled a pair of red striped emo sunglasses out of his jacket AS A JOKE and started to read his speech 🙂 It was too cute….and Jim was such a sweetheart, telling me how nervous he was before the first “practical joke” of his whole lengthy life!
JEWISH & CATHOLIC
Anna’s dad, who is Jewish, had Ben, who is Catholic, break the glass then started the dancing portion of the night with “Hava Nagila,” a traditional, celebratory Jewish song. Everyone dances together in a circle to the peppy music! And–poof–we had everyone on the dance floor to start the night off right…and that’s pretty much how it stayed until I ended the night with another AC/DC song for Ben: “You Shook Me All Night Long.” Watch the video here.
