If you have chosen the San Diego Air & Space Museum, a unique museum in Balboa Park, as your wedding venue, high fives! This is an “out of the box” venue that can accommodate more guests than any other non-hotel venue I’m aware of in San Diego (I once DJed a wedding here with 600 guests). Based on my experience DJing here, I’ve compiled this post of quintessential San Diego Air & Space Museum wedding tips for you.
PROS OF HAVING A SAN DIEGO AIR & SPACE MUSEUM WEDDING
- Easy to find
- Pick your own caterer, DJ, officiant, and photographer
- Free access to the museum for your guests
- No noise restrictions
- They only have one event going on at a time
- Probably the best built-in venue lighting I’ve ever seen anywhere in San Diego (uplighting on the trees/foliage plus color washes around the fountain and spotlights on some of the airplanes hanging from the roof–easily hundreds of dollars worth of lighting if you were to rent it separately)
CONS OF HAVING A SAN DIEGO AIR & SPACE MUSEUM WEDDING
- No bonafied ceremony site located on the property (Of course, if you have a standard wedding crowd of 100-150 guests, there is more than enough room in the reception area to set up a designated ceremony space.)
- Parking can be hit or miss
- The large reception rotunda room can be chilly/drafty after dark…I swear there is somehow a breeze in there! Likewise, the acoustics are tricky in there. Have your DJ use their regular dance floor speakers as well set up extra speakers around the perimeter (in the garden/flower bed around the edge).
- The lay-out/floor plan is non-traditional and can present some challenges
Considering the pros and cons, I give the San Diego Air & Space Museum two “soaring” thumbs up 🙂
TIPS FOR A SAN DIEGO AIR & SPACE MUSEUM WEDDING
- Make it fun by only using air and space related props at your photo booth–like Ray Bans, a white silk scarf and flying goggles, commercial airline pilot style captain’s hat, etc
- Resist the urge to spread out and “fill up the space” if you have an average crowd size (120-150 guests). This disperses the party energy–set up the bar, photo booth, and other activities as close as you can to the dance floor.
- Encourage guests to explore the museum during the cocktail hour (although you may want to close it off after dinner if having maximum bodies on the dance floor is a priority).
- Throw in some fun flying songs or wings songs…you know, since you’ll be standing under airplanes!
