So DJing at Social Media Marketing World 2016 all started when I entered a contest on the Social Media Examiner website…I entered their blog comment contest (explain why I should be the winner of a free ticket to the world’s biggest social media conference). Bam–I said I write for Book More Brides and would share what I learned with thousands of BMB readers (so a vote for this San Diego corporate DJ was like giving away thousands of free tickets). I said statistically wedding pros live right about at the poverty line, so nobody needs advice on free marketing methods more than the Book More Brides community. AND–this is the clencher–I mentioned that I live in San Diego so a free ticket for me didn’t leave me then having to buy an expensive plane ticket or anything like that.
I contemplated buying a ticket over the next week or two, but I thought, “No, just wait to see what happened with the blog comment contest.” Lo and behold, I got a voicemail from Phil Mershon at Social Media Examiner about 2 weeks later. EXCITED, I said, “You’re calling me because I won, right???” Not exactly.
Phil did say that my entry was in the top 5 out of hundreds…but they ultimately decided to award the free ticket to someone else. Phil had an idea though…he asked, since I lived in the area, how I might like to be their San Diego corporate DJ in exchange for a ticket. WHAT!!!! Spinning for 3,000 people from 40 different countries…that’s EVEN BETTER than winning a ticket.
SAN DIEGO CORPORATE DJ ON THE USS MIDWAY
So I got to play for 3 hours at their “Opening Night Party” on the USS Midway (Sunday) then each morning after the keynote during a one hour networking break (Monday, Tuesday) at the convention center. Two of the craziest load-ins EVER….fork lifts, union guys required to move my stuff, the signing of lengthy waivers, parking next to rows of semi trucks down in the loading dock.
On Sunday night, there wasn’t really a dance floor on the flight deck…just some tables, belly bars, and the bar. I opted for a sexy night-time “San Diego skyline” type vibe that wasn’t necessarily night-clubby or “pounding.” I wanted people to still be able to network and chat over their drinks but to still enjoy the fact that they were “out” (someone else is babysitting the kiddies tonight, right?)
For the morning networking breaks, I wanted to bring together a lot of different genres to reflect the conference’s diversity (and this San Diego corporate DJ’s breadth) but still provide a “let’s get pumped for the day” energy (9:00 AM-appropriate). I planned a key-matched, beat-matched one hour set for both Monday and Tuesday.
